H.L. POWER FROM HELL deliver an obscure black metal album. The mysterious atmosphere is mainly created by the echoing, husky and raw vocals, more spoken words than real singing. The songs are brittle and cold but not without demonic charm. There are heavy straight forward passages, good for the dynamic, but the bigger impact comes from threatening mid-tempo passages. Far away from "soft" post, melodic or symphonic black metal, "Shadows devouring light" stands for the hellish core of the black arts! Favorite track: Shadows Devouring Light.

Rich Kinman I saw this new one in Decibel magazine. Had to get it, sounds damn good.

Formed in 2001, Metal-lifers POWER FROM HELL from São Paulo, Brazil arrive on DMP in a style befitting the label with their fantastically obscure 7th full-length "Shadows Devouring Light".

The band's raw Black/Thrash sound of yesteryear has given way to a darker, more complete path within Black Metal: blending the primitive, lo-fi mysticism of the first wave, the unearthly melodic conviction of the second wave and the dissonant arpeggiation of modern innovators in a firestorm of rousing, hair-whipping songcraft.

Featuring three quarters of arcane Death Metal band ANARKHON, there is clear cross-pollination, with both acts having recently headed to murkier, more esoteric climes. The primary link is the warped riffing and skewed melodies of Sodomic – guitarist, main songwriter and frontman for both bands - whose masterfully evocative vocal incantations here deconstruct how the Abrahamic religions have negatively shaped human behaviour over the centuries.

A lightless, compulsive treat of unexpectedly momentous proportions.
